The pressure to win applies to every single win in the League of Legends World Championship. Teams only get six games to stack up victories in the group stage, so if you fall behind early, the quicker winning becomes absolutely mandatory.
But for both T1 and Cloud 9, who each lost games on day 2 of the group stage, this head to head match was a true must win game for both squads as last place in Group A was still a possibility. Nevertheless after a 25 minute match, T1 pushed Cloud 9 down into the basement of Group A.
Even though these 2 historic organizations rarely miss international tournaments, their opportunities to play each other have been small. Just a total of 6 games have been played between T1 and Cloud 9 from all the way back in 2014, and T1 has absolutely demolished the North American squad in all 6 games.
The two teams are guaranteed to battle at least one more time on Thursday, October 13th, when Group A plays through the second round of best of ones.

What’s most interesting about that period between matches played is Jensen and Faker, who have each spent quite a lot of time with their respective organizations, and have faced each other in five of those six games. On day 4, it was Faker who got the win against Jensen, the “Demon King” achieved a scoreline of 0/1/9 with utility champions Lissandra.
This game was also the 100th of Faker’s career, specifically at the World Championship. Of course, that’s the most out of all players in the history of League of Legends biggest tournament. And while 100 games is extremely impressive on its own merit, the most incredible part of Faker’s history at Worlds may just be that he has managed to win a total of 72 of those matches.
At this year’s edition of the World Championship, it feels like Faker’s entire champion pool is strong and within the meta. In this game, he chose to pilot Lissandra after selecting Akali twice in the opening matches of the group stage. It is only a matter of time until he starts picking other meta champions at the event, including his plethora of picks such as Azir, LeBlanc, and Viktor, the latter of which he’s played 113 times in his career, according to League of Legends statistics site Games of Legends.
Group A will not have any activity for 2 days, so T1, Cloud 9, Fnatic and EDG won’t battle in the Worlds’ stage until October 13th, when they will look to play all of their second round robin games in just 1 day, as is normal for the Worlds format. It will be the perfect chance for teams such as Cloud 9, to force a tie breaker in their group.
